Cognitive anthropology is the branch of anthropology that studies how people in different cultures perceive, organize, remember, and communicate knowledge. Rather than asking only what people believe, it asks how people mentally categorize the world and how language, culture, and shared experience shape those categories.
The field emerged prominently in the 1950s and 1960s, drawing on linguistics, psychology, and anthropology. Researchers investigate topics such as classification systems, cultural models, decision-making, memory, and meaning.
Folk taxonomies
A folk taxonomy is a culturally developed system for classifying things in the natural or social world. Unlike scientific classifications, folk taxonomies are based on practical experience, cultural significance, appearance, use, and local knowledge.
While scientific taxonomy aims to reflect evolutionary relationships, folk taxonomies prioritize what matters in everyday life.
Plants
Different cultures classify plants according to their ecological and cultural importance.
For example:
- A farming community may distinguish dozens of varieties of rice because each has different growing conditions or culinary uses.
- A rainforest community might have detailed categories for medicinal plants that scientific botany groups more broadly.
- Plants may be grouped by use (food, medicine, construction, ritual), rather than by biological family.
This means that two plants considered closely related by botanists might belong to different folk categories because they serve different purposes.
Animals
Animal classifications also vary according to cultural experience.
For instance:
- Animals may be grouped by habitat ("water animals," "forest animals").
- They may be classified by behavior (dangerous, domesticated, edible).
- Cultural beliefs can create categories that cut across biological ones.
A well-known example is that in some languages and cultures, creatures such as whales or dolphins may historically have been grouped with fish because they live in water, even though biology classifies them as mammals. Conversely, animals that are biologically unrelated may be grouped together because they are hunted in similar ways or share symbolic meanings.
Colors
Color provides one of the most famous examples of cross-cultural categorization.
Human eyes perceive colors in broadly similar ways, but languages divide the color spectrum differently.
Some languages:
- Have only a few basic color terms.
- Combine what English speakers call "blue" and "green" into a single category.
- Make distinctions that English does not.
One classic example is the language of the Himba, which has color categories that differ substantially from English. Speakers may distinguish shades that English speakers group together while using one term for colors English treats as separate.
Another example is Russian, which has separate basic words for lighter and darker blues, making that distinction more linguistically prominent than in English.
Why do these differences occur?
Cognitive anthropologists argue that categories are shaped by:
- Environment: People develop detailed distinctions for things that are important in their surroundings.
- Culture: Religious beliefs, traditions, and everyday practices influence classification.
- Language: The words available in a language can highlight certain distinctions.
- Practical needs: Hunting, farming, medicine, and trade encourage fine-grained knowledge in relevant domains.
These factors create cultural models—shared mental frameworks that members of a community use to understand the world.
Are folk taxonomies arbitrary?
Not at all. Research has shown that folk taxonomies are often remarkably systematic.
Many cultures organize living things into hierarchical levels similar to scientific taxonomy, though the groupings are based on different principles. For example:
- Broad categories ("plants," "animals")
- Intermediate categories ("trees," "birds")
- Specific kinds ("oak," "sparrow")
These systems are internally consistent and highly effective for everyday life, even if they do not match scientific classifications exactly.
