That's a fascinating question, and it points to an important distinction in how the brain works: knowing something is not the same as understanding it.
Several different brain processes contribute to what we call "understanding," and they don't always happen at the same time.

Recognition vs. explanation. You might recognize the correct answer instantly ("I know it's 42"), but if someone asks why it's correct, you struggle. Recognition is often much faster than building a mental explanation.

Different memory systems. Facts can be stored in memory without being deeply connected to other knowledge. Understanding usually means the brain has linked a concept to many related ideas, making it easier to explain, predict, and apply in new situations.

Intuition vs. reasoning. The brain often arrives at conclusions through unconscious pattern recognition before your conscious mind can describe the steps. This is why experts sometimes "just know" the right answer but have to think carefully to explain it.

The "tip-of-the-tongue" effect. Sometimes the information is stored, but the pathway to consciously retrieving or verbalizing it is temporarily inaccessible. You know you know it, but can't quite access it.

Working memory limitations. Understanding complex ideas requires holding multiple pieces of information in mind at once. If working memory is overloaded, you may feel like the concept is "there" but impossible to fully grasp.
A useful analogy is a computer:
- Knowing is like having a file saved on your hard drive.
- Understanding is like opening the file, connecting it with other files, editing it, and using it to solve new problems.
For example, a student might memorize that the derivative of (\sin x) is (\cos x). They know the answer. But if asked why that's true, or how derivatives relate to rates of change in a new context, they may not understand it deeply enough to explain or apply it.
Cognitive scientists often describe deep understanding as the ability to:
- explain an idea in your own words,
- connect it to other concepts,
- predict what will happen in new situations,
- and use it to solve unfamiliar problems.
So when it feels like "I know the answer, but I don't understand it," it's usually not because your brain is incapable. It's because the information exists in memory, but it hasn't yet been integrated into a rich network of related knowledge or translated into a form you can consciously manipulate and explain.
