Ping is the time it takes for a small piece of data to travel from your device to a server (or another device) and back again. It's measured in milliseconds (ms) and is more accurately called latency.
For example:
- 5–20 ms: Excellent (ideal for competitive gaming, video calls)
- 20–50 ms: Very good
- 50–100 ms: Good for most activities
- 100–200 ms: Noticeable delay
- 200+ ms: Can feel sluggish, especially for gaming or real-time communication
What affects ping?
Several factors influence latency:
- Distance to the server (signals can't travel faster than the speed of light).
- Connection technology (fiber, cable, satellite, etc.).
- Network congestion on your ISP or the wider internet.
- Router quality and home network setup.
- Whether you're using Wi-Fi or a wired Ethernet connection.
Which internet technologies have the lowest ping?
From lowest to highest latency under typical conditions:

Why fiber is usually the best
Fiber-optic internet generally provides the lowest and most consistent latency because:
- Data travels as light through optical fiber.
- It experiences less interference than copper-based technologies.
- Upload and download speeds are often symmetrical.
- Congestion tends to be lower on modern fiber networks.
For activities like competitive gaming, remote desktop work, and video conferencing, fiber is usually the preferred option.
What about satellites?
There are two very different types:
- Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite systems orbit a few hundred kilometers above Earth, so latency can be comparable to many terrestrial wireless connections.
- Geostationary satellites orbit about 35,786 km (22,236 miles) above Earth, so every signal travels a much longer distance, resulting in much higher latency.
Tips to reduce ping
- Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi.
- Connect to servers that are geographically closer to you.
- Avoid heavy downloads or uploads while gaming or making video calls.
- Upgrade older networking equipment if it's introducing delays.
- Choose an ISP with a well-connected network, not just the highest advertised download speed.
Is lower ping always better?
Yes, for interactive applications. Download speed determines how much data you can move per second, while ping determines how quickly communication begins. For example:
- Downloading a large file benefits mostly from higher bandwidth.
- Online gaming, voice chat, video conferencing, cloud gaming, and remote control benefit much more from low latency.
A connection with 300 Mbps and 10 ms ping will generally feel much more responsive than a 1 Gbps connection with 80 ms ping for real-time applications.
