A seaweed processing plant can mean very different things depending on the end product. The capital cost of a plant producing dried seaweed is vastly different from one producing carrageenan, agar, alginate, or biostimulants.
Below is a conceptual design for a medium-scale carrageenan processing plant, since it is one of the most common industrial seaweed processes. The same methodology can be adapted for agar or alginate.
Design Basis
Feedstock
- Red seaweed (Kappaphycus/Eucheuma)
- Wet feed: 100 tonnes/day
- Moisture: 80%
- Dry solids: 20 tonnes/day
Product
Semi-refined carrageenan (SRC)
Capacity:
- 7–8 tonnes/day finished product
- Approximately 2,500 tonnes/year (330 operating days)

Indicative EBITDA:
- $3–11 million/year before depreciation, financing, and taxes
Scale Sensitivity
| Capacity (wet seaweed) | Approx. CAPEX (USD M) | Approx. OPEX (USD M/yr) |
|---|
| 20 t/day | 8–12 | 3–4 |
| 50 t/day | 18–25 | 7–9 |
| 100 t/day | 30–45 | 14–16 |
| 200 t/day | 55–75 | 26–30 |
These figures are conceptual (Class 4/Class 5 estimate, roughly ±30–50% accuracy). A bankable estimate would require defining the seaweed species, target product specifications, site location, utility costs, labor rates, environmental requirements, and process technology before developing process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, equipment sizing, and vendor quotations.
