The nitrogen cycle is the biological process that converts fish waste into less harmful substances. In an aquarium, it's what makes the water safe for fish over the long term. Without a functioning nitrogen cycle, toxic waste builds up quickly—especially in a small tank like a 10-gallon aquarium.
Here's how it works:

Fish produce waste (and uneaten food and decaying plants also contribute), releasing ammonia (NH₃) into the water.
- Ammonia is highly toxic to fish, even at low concentrations.

Beneficial bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite (NO₂⁻).
- Nitrite is also toxic because it interferes with a fish's ability to transport oxygen in its blood.

A different group of beneficial bacteria converts nitrite into nitrate (NO₃⁻).
- Nitrate is much less toxic and can be tolerated at low to moderate levels.

You remove nitrate through regular water changes and by using live plants, which absorb nitrate as fertilizer.
A simple way to picture it is:
Fish waste → Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate → Water changes/plants remove nitrate
Why it's so important
If you add fish to a brand-new aquarium before these beneficial bacteria have become established, ammonia and nitrite can spike. This is commonly called "new tank syndrome." Fish may show signs such as:
- Gasping at the surface
- Clamped fins
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite
- Red or inflamed gills
- In severe cases, death
What "cycling" a tank means
Cycling an aquarium is the process of growing enough beneficial bacteria in your filter and on surfaces so they can process the waste your fish produce.
There are two common approaches:
- Fishless cycle (recommended): Add a source of ammonia (such as pure bottled ammonia or fish food) without any fish present. Test the water regularly until the bacteria can convert ammonia all the way to nitrate within about 24 hours.
- Fish-in cycle: Add only a few hardy fish and carefully monitor ammonia and nitrite with frequent water testing and water changes. This method requires much closer attention because the fish are exposed to toxins while the bacteria develop.
How long does it take?
Typically 3–6 weeks, though it can be faster if you:
- Use filter media from an established aquarium.
- Add a reputable bottled bacteria product.
- Keep the filter running continuously with good oxygen flow.
For a 10-gallon tank
Because a 10-gallon aquarium has a relatively small volume of water, water chemistry can change quickly. That makes it especially important to:
- Cycle the tank before fully stocking it.
- Use a filter that's appropriate for a 10-gallon aquarium.
- Test ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate regularly during the first several weeks.
- Perform regular partial water changes (often around 20–30% weekly once the tank is established).
A tank is generally considered fully cycled when:
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: Present (often 5–40 ppm before a water change)
Once you consistently see those readings, the biological filter is doing its job, and your aquarium is much safer for fish.
