The conflicting advice usually comes from people talking about different parts of Southeast Asia. The region spans thousands of miles, with multiple climate systems. There is no single "best time" for all of it.

The seasons in simple terms
November to February is the easiest recommendation for first-time visitors. Most of mainland Southeast Asia—Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, and much of Vietnam—is dry and pleasantly warm. This is also the busiest and most expensive time.
March to May brings intense heat across much of the mainland. It's still a good time for beaches, but sightseeing in cities and temples can be exhausting. Indonesia is often excellent during this period.
June to October is the southwest monsoon for many countries. However, "rainy season" doesn't usually mean constant rain. In many places you'll get a heavy afternoon downpour followed by sunshine. Prices are lower, landscapes are greener, and crowds are much smaller.
Why the advice seems contradictory
A few examples:
- While Phuket is wet in July, Bali is in its dry season.
- The east coast of Malaysia is best during months when the west coast is wetter.
- Northern and southern Vietnam can have completely different weather on the same day.

A good rule of thumb is:

- Best value: May or October (shoulder seasons with fewer crowds and generally decent weather)
- Best for diving: Varies significantly by location—different seas have different peak seasons.
