The frustrating part about organic chemistry is that most students are told to memorize it first, when the people who are actually good at it usually memorize last.
If it feels like you're drowning in reactions, try changing what you're studying.
1. Learn the "why" before the reaction
Instead of treating every reaction as a separate fact, ask:
- Where are the electrons going?
- Who is electron-rich (nucleophile)?
- Who is electron-poor (electrophile)?
- Why is this bond breaking instead of that one?
A lot of reactions become variations on the same few ideas once you start recognizing electron flow.
2. Group reactions into families
Don't memorize 80 individual reactions.
Organize them into categories like:
- Substitution (SN1, SN2)
- Elimination (E1, E2)
- Addition to alkenes
- Addition to carbonyls
- Oxidation
- Reduction
Then compare them:

3. Draw mechanisms constantly
Reading solutions isn't enough.
Cover the answer and force yourself to draw:
- curved arrows
- intermediates
- products
Even if you get it wrong.
Ten mechanism attempts usually teach more than rereading the chapter for an hour.
4. Use active recall—not highlighting
A good routine looks like:
- Study one reaction/mechanism for 5–10 minutes.
- Close the notes.
- Draw it from memory.
- Check mistakes.
- Repeat later that day.
- Repeat tomorrow.
Your brain remembers what it has to retrieve.
5. Build one giant reaction map
Many students find it helpful to keep a single sheet showing how compounds transform into one another.
For example:
Alkane
↓
Alkene
↙ ↘
Alcohol Alkyl halide
↓
Aldehyde
↓
Carboxylic acid
Seeing reactions as a network is much easier than treating each chapter as isolated.
6. Spend more time solving than reading
A rough rule:
- 20% reading notes/textbook
- 80% doing problems
Organic chemistry is much closer to learning a language or playing an instrument than memorizing history.
7. Make tiny flashcards
Instead of:
"Everything about hydroboration-oxidation"
Use cards like:
Front: Hydroboration gives what stereochemistry?
Back: Syn addition.
One fact per card makes spaced repetition much more effective.
A weekly routine that works for many students
- Monday: Learn new mechanisms.
- Tuesday: Redraw them from memory.
- Wednesday: Mixed practice problems.
- Thursday: Review old reactions.
- Friday: Timed synthesis problems.
- Weekend: Redraw the entire reaction map from memory.
One final thing: if you're in the first organic chemistry course, it's very common to feel like everyone else has some secret talent. In reality, many students struggle until they stop trying to brute-force memorization and start looking for patterns. Once those patterns click, the number of "things to memorize" drops dramatically.
