   Keeping Go documentation useful in a fast-moving codebase is less about writing more docs and more about making documentation part of the development workflow. A few habits tend to have the biggest payoff:

   1. Document exported APIs as you write them.

      • Treat missing or poor doc comments on exported types, functions, constants, and variables as a code quality issue.
      • Write comments that explain why and when to use something, not just restate the name.

   2. Keep package docs concise but valuable.

      • A package comment should answer:
        • What problem does this package solve?
        • What's the primary abstraction?
        • Is there a minimal example of using it?

   3. Prefer examples over long prose.

      • Go's example tests (Example... functions) serve double duty:
        • They become documentation.
        • They're executed during testing, so they stay correct.

   4. Review docs during code review. A useful review checklist includes:

      • Did this change alter behavior?
      • Should the package docs change?
      • Do exported APIs need updated comments?
      • Do existing examples still reflect best practices?

   5. Use linters. Useful tooling includes:

   6. Keep comments implementation-independent. Instead of:

   7. Document guarantees, not mechanics. High-value documentation answers questions like:

      • Is this thread-safe?
      • Who owns returned data?
      • Are nil values allowed?
      • What errors can occur?
      • What are performance expectations?
      • Is ordering guaranteed?

   8. Use CI to catch documentation regressions. Common checks include:

      • Lint exported comments.
      • Run example tests.
      • Fail builds on broken documentation generation if you publish docs.

   9. Make documentation part of refactoring. A simple rule is: if a public API changes, its documentation should change in the same pull request. This prevents documentation from lagging behind code.

   10. Periodically review package docs. Every few months—or before a release—read the package documentation as if you were a new user. Stale examples, outdated terminology, and missing caveats become obvious when viewed from that perspective.

   A pattern that scales well is to think of documentation at three levels:

   Examples	Demonstrate real usage patterns

   That structure keeps documentation maintainable even as the codebase grows.

   One final guideline that often improves long-term quality: if a comment merely repeats what the code already says (for example, "Add adds an item"), it's a candidate for improvement. The most valuable Go documentation explains behavior, constraints, edge cases, and intended usage—the information a reader can't infer directly from the implementation.
